Making dialogue is really fun. Creating dialogue is like playing The Sims because you get to control the next sentence… but wait, you don’t actually control the next sentence, your character does!

I bet you're thinking, “I created the character, so I know what I want them to say next.” That’s true, but if your character Suzy is the color green and she says, “I like being grey,” then there’s a disconnect between Suzy’s being and her words. Unless you are emphasizing the disconnect within Suzy’s internal being, you must write Suzy saying, “I like being green.”

This skill requires you to get to know your characters so that they can guide your words and create stronger, more coherent dialogue.
